Call for International Support for French University Teachers
The calls made by the SNESUP university teachers' union on January 22, in the presence of representatives from 43 Universities involved in the dispute at the national coordination meeting held on the same day, and by a group of law professors has been highly successful.
Last Monday, 60% of teachers in the Faculties of Law an Economics came out on strike. The unity achieved in the preparation of both the strike and the demonstrations due to take place on Thursday January 29 is expected to lead to significant action.
The common demands are clear
1)The abandon of the statutory decree concocted by the Minister of Education V. Pécresse, and the preservation of the role of the elected National University Council (CNU) in the management University careers.
2)The abandon of the catastrophic modifications proposed for the recruitment and training of elementary and secondary level teachers, and the preservation of the present system of competitive examination until 2010, following a wide public debate on a national scale.
3)The immediate suspension of the 1030 job suppressions imposed by the proposed 2009 budget among university teachers and researchers, and the setting up of a plan for recruitment over several years, as a fundamental part of the «revival plan ».
The SNESUP calls for an extension of the administrative action to a full-scale strike, in order to paralyse the Universities, and all higher education and research establishments on Thursday 29 January and beyond depending on the reactions of the government.

Appel au soutien international vers les universitaires français
La dynamique des appels lancés par le SNESUP le 22 janvier, en présence de représentants de 43 universités dans l'action, par la coordination nationale tenue le même jour, par le collectif des juristes ...rencontre un formidable succès.
Ce lundi, la grève est suivie à plus de 60 % dans les UFR Droit/Sciences Economiques. La préparation unitaire de la grève et des manifestations du 29 janvier annonce une journée très significative.
L'unité sur de premières revendications est claire
1)Retrait du décret statutaire concocté par V. Pécresse, maintien du CNU dans son rôle de gestion nationale des carrières.
2)Retrait des lourdes modifications envisagées pour la formation et le recrutement des enseignants du premier et du second degré, maintien des concours actuels en 2010, ouverture d'un vaste débat national public.
3)Suspension immédiate des 1030 suppressions d'emplois prévues au budget 2009 dans les universités et la recherche, lancement d'un plan pluriannuel de recrutement au c½ur d'un vrai « plan de relance ».
Le SNESUP appelle à passer de la phase de grève administrative à la grève, avec l'objectif de paralyser les universités, tous les établissements d'enseignement supérieur et de recherche le jeudi 29 et au-delà selon les réponses apportées par le gouvernement.
